7 Favorite Christmassy Romcom Movies

I’m not even ashamed to admit I love romcom more than any other genre. It’s now exactly 2 weeks until Christmas, but I have yet to truly feel the festive spirit (what’s wrong with me?). So I thought it’s high time I fix that, by watching some Christmassy movies. With things that are going on at the moment, I want to watch something light and uplifting, so I’ve decided to kill 2 birds with 1 stone by combining the best of things: Christmas and romcom.

Next year, I’m planning to start a series called ‘7 Things’ for this blog. It can be anything, from favorite dishes, favorite holiday destinations, favorite things to do, or something entirely random, but it will be a curated list of favorites. I’m planning to post it every Sunday, and although the official start will be in January, I thought I’d cheat a bit and post this now.

So here it is, my 7 favorite Christmassy romcom movies. Not all are Christmas movies, but they all have the same Christmassy feel! *MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS*

1. Love Actually

So much love, so much tears. I love all stories and everything about this movie. My favorites are the the stories of James and Aurelia who break the language barrier to communicate, and the unrequited love of a man who watches his best friend marry the girl he loves. The most heartbreaking scene? It must be when he confesses to her, ‘To me, you’re perfect’ before giving up for good. I love how every story is linked, and the sight of London around Christmas time.

2. The Holiday

Another heartwarming movie, although not without frustration and heartbreaks at the beginning. To distract themselves from recent heartbreaks, an American girl in LA (Cameron Diaz) and an English girl in Surrey (Kate Winslet) decide to switch homes, one in LA and the other in Surrey, and that’s when the adventures begin. This movie makes me realize 2 things: 1) I want to experience Christmas in a cottage somewhere in Surrey, 2) Jude Law is gorgeous.

3. Serendipity

There’s something about New York around Christmas time that is so charming. I think it’s pretty much everyone’s dream to experience Christmas in NYC at least once. Sara (Kate Beckinsale) and Jonathan (John Cusack) meet accidentally when shopping for Christmas at Bloomingdale’s, before parting ways. Sara assures John that if they’re destined to be together, they will meet again. I always love the idea of a serendipity, but I have to admit that I’m also frustrated with Sara for making things complicated as she wants to give it all up to fate. If you like a guy and he likes you back, you make it happen. Don’t wait for ‘fate’ to do the work, YOU do the work. Nevertheless, it’s still a good movie. Favorite scene? The ice skating at Wollman Rink.

4. Bridget Jones’ Diary

Ah, Bridget Jones, a girl after our own heart. With all her relatable problems like love life and career, it’s not hard to put yourself on her shoes. I love the book and this movie isn’t a letdown. Bonus: 2 of my favorite actors, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth, have major roles in this movie. Their fight scene with It’s Raining Men as the background music never fails to make me laugh.

5. Sleepless in Seattle

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are the best onscreen couple, and pair that with the queen director of romcom, Nora Ephron, then you can bet that the movie is something. A little boy helps his widowed father (Tom Hanks) to find a new wife, and eventually they find Annie (Meg Ryan). As cliche as it is, the iconic scene where they reunite at the top of the Empire State Building makes this movie a heartwarming one (and also, my favorite scene. I’m all for anything cheesy).

6. When Harry Met Sally

Another Nora Ephon’s movie (maybe her most successful one, beside You’ve Got Mail), featuring Meg Ryan (again!) as Sally and Billy Crystal as Harry. The story follows these 2 friends over the years as they navigate their lives in New York City, with 1 question to answer: can men and women truly be friends? This movie isn’t exactly Christmassy, but the scenes toward the end have this Christmassy atmosphere. Plus, this is one of my favorite romcom movies of all time, so I have to include it here.

7. While You Were Sleeping

Again, not very Christmassy but the atmosphere is there. Lucy (Sandra Bullock) has a crush on Peter (Peter Gallagher), a commuter she sees every day. One day, Lucy saves Peter from an oncoming train. Peter is saved but he falls into a coma, and his family misinterprets Lucy as his fiancée. It’s light and funny, and definitely heartwarming.

What’s your favorite Christmassy romcom movie?

Toss Dixie! Aku suka Notting Hill, You’ve got mail, dan The Proposal. Yg terakhir aku nonton berkali2, dan jadi terobsesi pergi ke Alaska haha.

Toss! Romcom emang favorit ya Mbak. Serendipity maniiis banget ceritanya, tapi rada greget juga haha. Aku juga sukaaa banget sama Notting Hill, You’ve Got Mail, sama The Proposal (terutama You’ve Got Mail, jadi makin pengen punya toko buku sendiri hehe), sayangnya 3 film itu ga bertema Natal jadi ga masuk list ini. Mungkin nanti aku akan bikin daftar romcom favorit yang general 😉 Oh iya aku juga suka Pretty Woman sama Definitely Maybe, nontonnya juga diulang2 terus 😀
