Final Destination 5: A Major Twist Saves It All

SPOILER ALERT!

Last Thursday I went out with my friends to watch Final Destination 5. I’ve watched the previous movies (except the fourth one), and rumor says that this is the last of the series. I was more than curious. I had to swallow my gulp when my friend told me to watch it in 3D. More thrill, he said.

It definitely gave us more thrill.

The first time I put my 3D glasses on and saw the opening credit with glass shatters that seemed like flying towards me, I thought, wow. This gotta be good. I’ve watched movies in 3D before, but this is the first time I felt the effect. I embraced myself for the upcoming thrilling and bloody scenes. I knew from the previous movies that Final Destination has always had bloody and cruel deaths.

The movie started as usual, when Sam Lawton (Nicholas D’Agosto) had a premonition about an accident that occurred on the bridge he was passing on in a bus. Panic, he grabbed his (ex)girlfriend Molly (Emma Bell) and dragged her out. Several of his friends followed him, wondered why the hell did he gone lunatic in the middle of the day. It didn’t take long before they realized that the bridge was cracking and later, collapsed. Most of his friends died while 8 managed to survive.

As the previous movies, the remaining people were taken by death one by one, just like the order of the death in Sam’s premonition. Now, don’t let me begin about how cruel the deaths are. They are beyond cruel. I really should have followed my instinct when it said ‘Don’t watch it in 3D! Don’t! Don’t!‘ I’ve been trying to erase the vision of a girl who was ripped in half, with her bones cut out and blood everywhere. And for those who intend to have lasic surgery (like I do), do not, I repeat, do not watch this movie. It will scare the hell out of you to watch an eyeball being popped out and run over by a truck in the middle of a lasic surgery. Scared enough? Well, don’t be. There are more bloody deaths, one of them included a hook and the other included sharp metal poles. It’s a bit waste of money to watch this in 3D (at least for me), since I closed my eyes most of the time. I even screamed on one (or… more. Ahem) scene(s). Khemal, who was unfortunate to get a seat beside me, turned to me right after my first scream and asked, “Did you just scream?” And as I nodded, he said, “Gosh, I feel like watching in 4D!” Thank you so much, Khemal.

Anyway, I didn’t really enjoy this movie. Blame me for having this weak heart (in my defense, all my friends got weakened as well, means this movie was really that cruel), but I couldn’t stand seeing a body ripped, or somebody pricked by thousands needles as he was having acupuncture, or an eyeball being popped out from a face. Really. Are the editor and scriptwriter and director really humans?

The story was predictable, thanks to the same pattern that they kept from the previous movies. But I note a thing that can make surprises (because they really need surprises to keep the audience interested in this movie apart from the same pattern, right?). It’s the twist. Or maybe I’ll say, the twist is the main key in this movie, the thing that keep people wondering. I’ll give you an example. There was a hob that fell and landed on a bench that Candice (Sam’s friend) was walking on, back and forth, as she was having a practice for gymnastic session. More than three times, I expected her to step on that hob, got pricked, fall from the bench, ruptured her neck or something and died. That was I expected because, hey, I knew from the premonition that she would be dead. But what happened was, she didn’t step on that hob. Oh, she died alright, but the accident that was caused by the tiny little hob was far from what I had imagined.

And of course, the main twist is the compensation for the so-so plot and cruel death. I’ll give you a clue, it has something to do with the first movie, about Flight 180. I’m jumping up and down here to keep myself from spoiling the ending, but let me tell you, it’s good. It made me gasp and  gawk, and I couldn’t stop saying, “Ohmygod. Ohmygod.” The twist in the end is the only thing that’s unpredictable.

Overall, this movie is quite good if you don’t have a weak heart. If you’re as weak as me, maybe it’s better for you to just read the summary in the internet. Spare yourself from wincing and closing tight your eyes until it hurt and being hunted for the next few days. And for you who dare, don’t expect much. In fact, expect nothing but the twist in the end.

Happy watching!
